Congratulations on your decision to get a new puppy! It is an exciting time when you decide to bring a new puppy home, whether you are a first-time puppy owner or bringing a puppy home after long intervals. Preparing for a new puppy is the same as preparing for the arrival of a human baby. Our goal is to give you some helpful information and recommendations that we have learned over the years to make life with your new fur baby happy, healthy and a complete success.

When it comes to choosing puppy supplies for our new addition, we believe safety should be our top priority! Did you know that many everyday products available now a days contain toxins. Chemicals used are known carcinogens & can contribute to chronic conditions including allergies, skin irritations, endocrine disrupters & even organ damage. They are also linked to cancer with repeated use. From leashes, collars, dog beds, chew toys, bowls, food containers, etc.

Puppies/dogs absorb chemicals through their skin and paws - and groom themselves daily therefore ingesting residues. Exposure happens through months and years. 2. Crate , the correct size is a must. Is a useful device for raising a puppy, and perhaps one of the most misunderstood, the fold-up wire crate. Properly used, this device can aid in potty training. The puppy only needs enough room to turn around in and stretch out in. Anymore they may eliminate in it. We recommend setting it up in your bedroom so your new puppy is not alone.

Most toxic chemicals get into dog products during the manufacturing process. Keeping your dog safe and happy during the Fall season requires some extra attention and care due to the changing weather and potential hazards. Here are some tips to ensure your furry friend has a wonderful Fall:

1. Stay Warm: As temperatures start to drop, ensure your dog is warm enough, especially if they have short fur or are sensitive to the cold. Consider getting them a cozy sweater for outdoor walks.

2. Watch for Toxic Plants: Fall often brings out different plants, some of which can be toxic to dogs. Keep an eye out for mushrooms (certain ones are toxic), acorns, and certain berries that might be ingested by your dog.

3. Allergies: Dogs can have allergies too, and Fall can trigger seasonal allergies in them. If you notice excessive scratching, licking, or chewing, consult your vet for guidance.

4. Fall Foods to be cautious of: Be cautious with Fall foods such as apple seeds, stem, leaves, skin, or raw seeds of pumpkins.

5. Antifreeze Awareness: With colder temperatures many people choose the Fall as the time to change their car's engine coolant. However, antifreeze is extremely toxic to dogs. Keep it out of reach and be cautious during walks where it might be spilled on the ground.

6. Flea & Tick prevention: A Flea & Tick Repellant Is especially important this time of the year. Once those leaves start falling from the trees, ticks can be at their worse! We prefer to use a more natural approach.

So…your pup is now an adult!! ��

Happy Birthday to your pup! Celebrating your puppy’s first birthday!! You made it through all the stages of puppy hood.

Let’s Paw-ty!

A puppy is officially considered an adult dog between the ages of 1 – 2 years depending on the breed and that is once their bones have fully developed. Of course, they will continue to be as playful and energetic.

Smaller breeds finish growing at a year, while larger breeds will get slightly bigger over the next few months until they’ve reached their final height and size. Once your pup is fully grown, you will know just how big or small your pup will be so you can buy them all their essential dog supplies needed in the correct sizes for collars, crates, beds, etc.

Daily Exercise

It is still very important for you to maintain your schedule of training, socialization, and daily exercise. Hopefully by now, your dog knows how to walk on a leash without pulling. Make sure you are using the correct tools and sizes , Collars & Leash . You will need a 6 feet lightweight leash, and a plain flat comfortable collar. You should be able to fit 2-4 fingers between the collar and the dog’s neck. It should be snug enough that it can’t be slipped over their head.

A well-fitted harness can be a wonderful tool for many dogs. Harnesses should only be worn when your dog is on a leash. Grooming

By now they have shed their puppy coat and their adult coat has come in. From here on out you can expect regular shedding especially in the Spring and Fall. Your pup now has a better attention span than he did when he was younger. This means he can learn more complicated behaviors and training besides the basic commands he learned as a young puppy. The dog world offers all kinds of fun competitions for you and your dog to participate in. This is a good time to get into dog sports such as obedience, agility, tracking and rally. Your dog doesn’t have to be a purebred to be eligible. Flyball, dock diving and tracking, can be loads of fun too. Once your dog is 1 year old, he’s got the maturity and attention span to take on these sports.

Diet & Nutrition

Puppy diets are calorie and nutrient rich to support their rapid growth that puppies need when they are small, but as they mature their growth needs change. Adult diets are lower in calories and contain different vitamins and minerals to support their adulthood. Some even contain long term nutrients for joint health. If you are happy with their quality of their current puppy food, then you can purchase their adult formula. I would recommend keeping the flavor and formula similar. If feeding a chicken-based formula, then continue with chicken.

We recommend a Raw Diet that is complete & balanced. When transitioning from puppy food to adult food you should transition gradually over a week period. During this transition, gradually incorporate more and more of the new food by mixing it with your puppies' current diet each day. Transitioning too quickly can cause stomach upset with loose stools or diarrhea. If you have transitioned gradually and your dog is still experiencing stomach upset, it is best to consult with your veterinarian. It may be necessary to choose a different diet.

Please keep in mind it is recommended to change their food every 4 months or so. By switching between high quality dog foods, you’re giving your dog a wider variety of essential nutrients to keep them healthy. Other benefits of switching your dog’s food often are avoiding allergic reactions. Its nutritional to add some fresh food, like a few blue berries, even some pumpkin or sweet potato to their food. Some Veggie and fruit are awesome for healthy diet.

If you have a finicky eater, you can try adding some freeze-dried food like Grandma Lucy Pureformance . They LOVE it. Mix it with warm water and let it sit for approx. 5 minutes. The smell alone will entice them to eat. We also recommended adding supplements, if you haven't started yet, now that your pup is an adult. With dry kibble it loses a lot of its nutrition (Vitamins, Minerals, Etc.) during the processing process. Therefore, we need to add some back into their diet.

For your Yard we take a more natural approach. We believe in limiting exposure to chemicals/pesticides. So, we use Diatomaceous Earth to kill & repel fleas, ticks and most other bugs. Food Grade only ! Its natural and safe around children & animals. Can even be applied to your dog for fleas & ticks. Just don't inhale some. Its powder based.

If your pooch already has fleas, then you will need a product that kills. It's always recommended to use a product that repels, but we need to get those nasty blood suckers off your pooch. A repellent won't cut it. You will need a product that kills and repels as well. Then I recommend using Vets+Best Flea & Tick Spot-on .

Luxury Items

A luxury Item to have is a vacuum that does a dynamite job with dog hair. Your new puppy will shed his puppy coat for his adult coat. But for most breeds with their adult coat comes constantly shedding. Expect more in the Fall & Spring. Tips for Riding in your Car with your Puppy/Dog

I t's not unusual for dogs to have behavior problems related to the car. Usually, it is fear of riding in the car, car sickness or hyperactive. If your dog is fearful of car rides or gets car sick, then you must show your dog that there is nothing to be afraid of and no reason to be sick. Many dogs associate car rides with previously being carsick or something unpleasant. Reintroduce them to the car again slowly and in a non-stressful way.

Start out by just sitting in the car with the dog. The safest way for a dog to ride in the car is in the back seat with a dog seatbelt f irst attempt just sit in the car, don’t even start the motor. Don’t go anywhere. Just sit in there, listen to the radio, etc. Soon your dog will realize that nothing terrible has happened and that it did not make him sick. Keep doing this until the dog is obviously relaxed and not fearful. If the dog does get sick, then you’ve stayed in the car too long and should start for shorter periods. When you see that your dog is comfortable in the car, move on to the next step and start the engine, but still do not go anywhere. When the dog is relaxed with the motor running, then begin taking very short trips, perhaps just around the block. Then maybe to the corner store.

Once your dog gets more and more comfortable, you can gradually go for longer rides. Drive to places where the dog will have fun. Like a favorite walking area, hike or to the beach, a park or a friend's house. Let the dog associate car rides with fun, pleasant and rewarding experiences.

Do not rush your dog into anything or else it may just slow down the process.

Make sure you teach your dog some basic obedience commands. Down-stay command. Sit in the car while it is running and practice with your dog. Start out when your parked in a quiet spot. Once this command is mastered, then you can begin practicing in some distracting places. But avoid traffic until your dog can obey this command.

In order for punishment to be effective, it must be administered at the time the offense is committed. Physical punishment of a puppy is not necessary. Startling a puppy with a stern “NO” or rattling a can containing pebbles or coins is usually adequate. A remote correction is used so the puppy doesn’t associate you with the correction. This can be achieved with a hand-held air-horn. An example of a remote correction would be if your puppy is digging a hole or barking, and you blast the air-horn and don’t let him know you made the noise. This way he won’t associate the punishment with you.

Never punish your puppy after the fact. He will have no idea why you are correcting him because the offense he committed occurred too long ago. Whenever you correct your puppy, always make him sit and then praise the good behavior of sitting. Then you can try redirecting him to something that's fun, like an interactive treat puzzle, for example The Brick Dog Puzzle a nd the Bob-a-Lot Dog Toy .

Jumping and pawing

When your puppy jumps up and places his paws on you, he is seeking your attention. If you allow him to jump up when he is a puppy, he will want to do the same thing when he is an adult. If you push him down or “knee” him in the chest, he is still getting your attention, even if it is negative of attention. The best response is to turn and walk away without saying anything. When your pup next approaches you, make him sit before he has the opportunity to jump up, then reward and praise him for sitting. Your puppy must always sit for everything he receives, and when he sits, you must reward him for his good behavior.

Rough play

When you play physical games with your puppy, you are teaching him that hands and arms are fun things to grab. Younger children in the family pay the price for the rough play instigated by older children or adults. It is better to use toys as play objects and have your puppy learn to fetch them when thrown. If your puppy steals an item such as a shoe, slipper, sock or piece of clothing, and you chase him, he will soon learn that stealing things is a good way to get your attention. For some, it is fun to interact with their puppy in this manner. If you don’t enjoy this game, the next time your puppy steals an item and runs from you, turn and walk in the opposite direction.

Biting hands and mouthing

Puppies must be taught to be gentle when their mouths and teeth come in contact with a human. If your puppy puts his mouth on your hand, and if he bites down on your hand a little too hard, you should “yelp” very loudly, then turn and walk away. Your puppy will learn that if he bites a human too hard, he will lose his playmate. Be sure to provide him with plenty of items he is allowed to chew on.

Destructive behavior

A puppy is unable to use his paws to pick up items, so he resorts to chewing on them instead. Chewing is a very natural behavior for a puppy, so it is important to direct him to chew on items which you provide for him. Until your puppy is older and you can trust him not to be destructive, you should never leave him unattended. If you leave him unattended, eventually he will destroy something of importance. If you leave home and allow your puppy to be loose unattended, and then return and find he has destroyed a cherished item, unfortunately a punishment for this behavior is very difficult.

He will not have a clue why you are so mad because he probably chewed up the object hours ago. Stay calm, just clean up the mess and don’t leave him unattended until he can be trusted not to chew on things. You must catch him in the act of chewing for punishment to change his behavior. A good stern “NO CHEW” is adequate punishment if caught in the act. Make him sit, praise the sit and then give him something that he is allowed to chew on. Providing a supply of items to chew on is the key to preventing destructive behavior. I recommend Bully Sticks , Kong Extreme , and Antlers . Praise him when he chews on the items you provide. Buy several different items and rotate them to keep him interested in chewing.

Barking

Barking is a normal response for all dogs to some external stimuli in their environment. When outdoors, your puppy may see other dogs, strangers, kids, a cat or any number of things to bark at. As a good neighbor, you should never leave your dog outdoors unattended if he is a barker. You should always monitor his activity and bring him indoors if his barking might bother a neighbor. If your puppy barks for attention, give him a stern “NO BARK,” make him sit, and praise him for sitting. If he continues to bark, isolate him in a room where he is left alone so he will learn that barking will get him banished from family activities.

Digging

Digging is a normal canine activity. Your puppy may smell a mole or chipmunk in the flowerbed and try to dig it out. He may want to bury and hide a favorite bone. He may make a game out of tugging on a shrub or plant root. If it is too hot, he may dig a hole under a bush or shrub to stay cool. Unless you are outside to stop the behavior, digging is a very difficult problem to solve. If you can determine why your puppy is digging you can usually correct the behavior. If there is a chipmunk in the flowerbed, expect your puppy to continue digging until you get rid of it. If he is too hot, consider a Wading Pool to cool him as well as some type of shaded area. If he is bored, provide plenty of chew items.

You can build a digging pit by digging up a three foot by three-foot area of soil and mixing a lot of sand into the soil to make digging easier. Then bury items for him to dig up such as a large bone . Start by partially burying the item so it is easy to find. After he gets the idea, bury them deeper. His reward will be to chew on the item he digs up and this good behavior will hopefully keep him from digging up desirable areas of the yard. If you catch him digging, a stern “NO DIG” may suffice. If not, try startling him with a loud noise such as a hand-held air-horn . If you go outside and find a new hole, do not scold him. You have to catch him in the act of digging for the punishment to work.

Motion sickness

Do not feed your puppy prior to a car ride. Take him on many short trips and gradually increase the length of the rides once he becomes accustomed to the motion of the car. Take plenty of paper towels or newspapers to shove under him if he starts to vomit. If he is still getting sick when you take him in the car, there are various products available nowadays. Handling

Eventually all dogs will need to have their toenails trimmed, their ears cleaned, their hair combed, or their teeth brushed. If you wait to use a nail clipper t o trim a dog’s nails for the first time when he weighs 90 pounds, good luck! You will most likely have a wrestling match on your hands and you both will become very unhappy. So how do you get a dog to become accustomed to these types of procedures? You need to start when they are very young. At 8 weeks old start trimming their nails and cleaning their ears. Get him used to having just the tips of his nails trimmed. Do a few nails at a time and trim just the sharp tips so you don’t cut them too close and make them bleed, if they do start to bleed, use Kwik-Stop Styptic Powder it q u ickly helps stop the bleeding . You really don’t want to hurt your puppy and have him become fearful.

After trimming a few nails reward him with a treat. You want him to know that every time he gets his nails trimmed, he gets rewarded. Do the same thing when you clean his ears with a good brand ear cleaner or brush his teeth with doggie toothpaste . When your puppy is near you, handle his feet, look in his ears and open his mouth. If you do this every time he is around, he will become desensitized to having it done. Anything you will ever have to do with your dog when he is older, you must first get him accustomed to early. Repeating these things frequently will make it much more pleasant when he is older. Start now and get him desensitized to potentially unpleasant procedures.

Mounting behavior

Mounting is not always a sexually motivated behavior. Dogs mount other dogs in order to show control or dominance. If small children are the target and they cannot defend themselves, you will have to intervene and stop this behavior. If your puppy is mounting a small child, say to the puppy in a stern voice “OFF.” If adults or older children are involved, instruct them to turn and walk away without saying anything when the puppy first attempts to mount. Your puppy will soon get the message and stop.

Eating feces

Nobody is absolutely sure why dogs eat their own feces. Some feel there are ingredients in the feces that have nutritional value. It is unlikely there is a deficiency in a dog’s diet if he is being fed any name brand food. Some puppies left confined in crates or cages for long periods may eat their own feces due to boredom. Puppies should not be left in a crate all day.

If a puppy cannot be taken out of his crate to eliminate during the day, he should be confined to a small room with his cage door open. Place washable training pads on the floor so if he has to eliminate, he can leave his crate and go on the pads. If your puppy is eating his own or another animal’s feces, you must catch him in the act and try to startle him as soon as he even sniffs the feces. I prefer to use a hand-held air-horn . You can also use a can with pebbles or a loud noise to startle him. Don’t let him know you are the one making the noise. If he associates you with the noise, he will wait until you are not around to eat the feces. Picking up the feces before he has a chance to reach them is the best prevention.

Keep your pet cool in the summer

Never, never leave your pet in a parked car- Not even if you crack the windows or park in the shade. On a 70F day, the car temperature can rise above 150F in minutes. It’s extremely dangerous and the number 1 cause of heatstroke.

Always provide plenty of fresh water- Dogs can only sweat through the pads of their feet and by panting. Evaporation from wet surfaces or their mouth and nose helps lower body temperature.

Watch for hot pavements and beaches- Sensitive paws burn easily.

Find a cool spot- For indoors pets, keep the air circulating with a child-proof fan or air conditioner. Provide shade for outdoor pets. And a gentle sprinkler from a hose is always appreciated.

Not every dog can paddle well- Animals in the water for the first time should be eased in gradually, never thrown or chased in.

Don’t let them drink from pools, streams or the ocean. And, if they swim, rinse them off. Salt and minerals can damage a dog’s coat.

Sunburn is no day at the beach-It hurts. Shorthaired pets and those with pink skin and white hair are especially susceptible. Limit their exposure.

Watch for signs of heatstroke – Rapid panting, hot skin, twitching muscles, a dazed look. Wrap them in a towel soaked with cool, not cold water. In severe cases, place them in the bathtub. Heatstroke can be fatal. See your vet as soon as possible.

Keep vaccinations up to date- This is the time when most pets come in contact with other animals, at parks, campgrounds, etc.

Heartworm prevention- Fleas, ticks, mosquitos thrive in warm, humid environments. See your Vet for preventive program.

If your pooch already has fleas, then you will need a product that kills. It's always recommended to use a product that repels, but we need to get those nasty blood suckers off your pooch. Puppies do teethe and biting is typical and expected. They teethe a lot! Puppies use their mouths to explore, investigate their surroundings and communicate. Also, how they play with other dogs. During this teething stage you will need some hard chew toys/bones to get you through it. Do not allow that cute, adorable puppy to chew/bite your hands at no time. Maybe cute now but can send mix signals to your new puppy. Remember everything is new to him. They are very impressionable. So NEVER allow them to bite on us hoomans! If you have young children, it can be challenging. They associate young children with their littermates and/or toys. Their running and jumping around may seem like fun to your excitable puppy and your puppy may want to join in. However, if you teach your child to stand completely still, arms crossed against their chest, then the child appears boring, and the puppy will usually be less interested. If not, then a time out technique to calm down may be needed. Use a Crate or a Playpen for a time out. Then allow him to join the family again and redirect him to a toy/bone that is acceptable for teething.

Puppies are so much like our hooman children and need positive reinforcement. Encouraging words and lots of praise. But make sure you teach your puppy the command words, "NO!" The teething process does not last very long so that's the good news! Puppies start losing their first set of teeth between 4-5 months of age. Usually by 6 months old they should have nearly all their adult teeth in place. If your puppy is happy, healthy, playful, eating, and drinking normally, teething shouldn’t be an issue. Basic Training for a New Puppy

Basic Training

1 .) For the first 2 -3 weeks with the new family it is important for the puppy to continue his socialization and to establish good habits. Get puppy on a routine.

2.) Teach puppy his name.

3.) Teach puppy to come on command, to sit, to stay, down and heel. You can use Zukes Mini Naturals as a training treat.

Creating a Safe Haven for your New Puppy

Puppies are naturally inquisitive, which can often lead to serious injury. Here are some tips on how you can make your house and yard safer for the arrival. Too much freedom before they are potty trained can lead to having accidents.

These tools are helpful, a Baby/Pet gate , a Playpen and a Crate .

Remove all potential hazards. We don't recommend any bedding in the crate. Regular dog beds or crate mats inside the crate can be dangerous, so if you decide to use them, please keep an extra eye or 2 or 3 on them. Golden Retrievers put everything and anything in their mouths. After all, they are Retrievers. No rugs or towels also. Once your puppy is out of that puppy stage, then a bed can be used.

PUPPIES GROW QUICKLY - so collars can be quickly outgrown, leading to serious wounds. Personal items and medications like cosmetics, shampoos, skin creams, hair “perm” solutions, suntan lotions, sleeping pills, antihistamines, aspirin and acetaminophen can all be very lethal to pets.

CHOCOLATE - can be dangerous. It contains theobromine, a powerful stimulate that is very toxic to pets. Sweets, pies, cakes and cookies can also upset a young animals G.I. tract and lead to diarrhea and vomiting, which can be serious.

BONES - can splinter and cause serious injury. Never give turkey or chicken bones as a treat.

HOUSEHOLD KILLERS - Cleaning agents, bleach, ammonia, disinfectants, drain cleaner, oven cleaner, paint, gasoline, rat poison. Keep them locked up and away from you Puppy.

ANTIFREEZE- Pets are attracted to the odor and sweet taste of it. Store it up high and tightly sealed, wiping up any spills on the ground or garage floors. Don't forget window-washing solution also contains antifreeze.

KEEP OFF THE GRASS - If you treat your lawn with chemicals, keep pets away. Read and follow label directions carefully. A better alternative is a natural & safe protect, Wondercide .

HEAT - Watch out for hot irons, coffee pots and space heaters. Puppies grow quickly and will soon be able to jump to new heights. Keep covers on hot tubs and swimming pools. Puppies and even adult dogs can fall in and not be able to get out.

'TIS THE SEASON - Keep holly, mistletoe, poinsettias and especially Christmas tinsel, ribbons and bows out of reach. I recommend not using glass Christmas tree ornaments until your puppy matures. If you have a fireplace/wood stove always use a fireplace screen / baby gate .

SUMMER HEAT - Never, ever leave your pet in a parked car. Not even if you crack all the windows or park in the shade. On a 70F day, the car temperature can easily rise above 150F in just minutes. It’s extremely dangerous and is the number 1 cause of heatstroke.

Always provide plenty of fresh water- Dogs can only sweat through the pads of their feet and by panting. Evaporation from wet surfaces or their mouth and nose helps lower body temperature.

Watch for hot pavements and beaches- Sensitive paws burn easily.

Find a cool spot - For indoors pets, keep the air circulating with a child-proof fan or with the air conditioner. Provide shade for outdoor pets. And a gentle sprinkler from a hose is always appreciated.

When introduced to the water for the first time they should be eased in slowly, never thrown or chased in. Don’t let them drink from pools, lakes, rivers, streams or the ocean. Always rinse them off with clean water afterwards. Salt and minerals can damage a dog’s coat. Shorthaired pets and those with pink skin and white hair are especially susceptible to sunburn and it will make them hurt. Limit their exposure.

Watch for signs of heatstroke – Rapid panting, twitching muscles, hot skin and a dazed look in their eyes. Wrap them in a towel soaked with cool, not cold water. In severe cases, place them in the bathtub. Heatstroke can be fatal. See your vet as soon as possible.

Crate Training your New Puppy

One of the most useful devices for raising a puppy, and perhaps one of the most misunderstood, is a fold-up wire crate. Properly used, this device can aid in housetraining puppies. It can also be used for your own puppy's safety, and to save your home from costly damages. Since the crate is portable, it can be easily taken along on trips. Thus, overnight visits or vacations with the family pet can be more enjoyable. People who raise, train, and show dogs have been aware of the benefits of crates for years. Unfortunately, the new pet owner is not as well-informed.

I advise owners of new puppies to concentrate on housetraining, socialization, and crate training during the early weeks of rearing.

SEPARATION REFLEX

When separated from their social group, most pups whine, bark, or howl, these sounds are referred to a distress vocalizations. In the wild, these sounds increase the chances that a puppy will be reunited with the pack. If a pup’s movement is restricted while it is isolated, I will respond with escape behaviors such as digging, thrashing about, and chewing. These behaviors have obvious benefits for survival.

Many pet owners inadvertently elicit these behaviors by placing the pup in a barricaded kitchen or other unoccupied area of the home. Sometimes these owners provide a ticking clock, a radio, or a hot water bottle to “comfort” the animal. This entire procedure is unnecessary at the least and can harm the puppy psychologically and physically if emotional behaviors indicating stress are allowed to persist or worsen.

RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE

The procedure we use and recommend for inhibiting the separation reflex is based upon several other canine tendencies. These are the pup’s preference to bed down with, or in the presence of, to bed down in a sheltered, den-like atmosphere; and to learn through association. The procedure we recommend is as follows:

1. Acquire a collapsible dog crate, we recommend the Midwest Life Stages Crate with a divider panel that can be adjusted as your new puppy grows! The crate should be large enough for a puppy to stand and turn around in it and stretch out, no more than that. Remember Larger breed puppies grow so fast. So as long as it has a divider panel, it can be adjusted as your puppy grows. Have the crate ready for when the puppy comes home.

2. Assemble the crate in the bedroom of the house.

3. Introduce the puppy to the crate well before bedtime.

4. Introduce the puppy to the crate by placing several treats Zukes Mini Naturals directly in front of the door and a few inside. Give a command word (kennel), (crate) or (in). Let the puppy walk in then back out, just to get use to it. Then do it again. Offer treats outside and inside of crate, let the puppy walk in, then close and lock the door.

5. Leave the room but remain just outside in order to monitor the pup’s behavior.

6. At the first indication of any separation responses, intervene with a sharply raised voice. The idea is that the puppy associate its behavior with a startling outcome the behavior produced. Some pups will not respond to a raised voice. We have heard that most puppies respond well to sounds generated by a shaker can (a small can containing several coins).

7. Usually the pup settles quietly in the crate after 3-8 attempts at emotional responses, if they are followed by a startling sound. After the pup is quiet, keep him inside the crate for about 10 minutes. Then bring the puppy outside to eliminate. Bring him to the same spot each time. Give him a command word (go bathroom) (go pee-pee) well you get the idea! After he has eliminated, praise and pet him, tell him, he’s a good boy! Then bring him back inside.

8. After intervals of 30-45 minutes, repeat the procedure. During those 30-45 minutes play with and love your puppy. Then extend the pup’s quiet time in the crate to about 30 minutes.

9. While the pup is inside the crate, provide one chewable toy. We recommend the BetterBones they are all natural. Other items such as blankets or newspapers are not necessary. Also, any collar or leads should be removed to prevent entanglement. A Snuggle Pup can help with anxiety AND aid in comfort. We recommend to not put it inside the crate, just outside it should be sufficient.

Feeding him in the crate is also helpful for your puppy to associate being in the crate with an enjoyable experience. Can also use a Lick Mat that attaches to the crate . Just throw it in the washing machine. As the pup get a little older the Crate Mat i s ideal for inside or outside the dog crate. 10. While your puppy is settling inside his crate, you can keep a good eye on him with a Video Monitor with Camera . One that allows you to carry it around the house with you while inside your home or in your yard. Allows you to see, hear & even talk to them.

By the time bedtime arrives, the pup has already associated being quiet with being inside the crate. Also, the effects produced by separation are negated if the crate is in a bedroom where a member of the family sleeps. For a puppy that doesn't settle easily into the crate, you can try a crate cover to settle them. They do seem to help.

OVERNIGHT ELIMINATION

Usually after waking the pup will eliminate. If the pup awakens while inside the crate and needs to eliminate, it will probably whine or bark, since dogs tend to avoid eliminations in their bedding areas (den effect). The pup can then be taken outside to eliminate.

PROS AND CONS

This procedure has several advantages for house-training puppies. First of all, the pup does not form the habit of eliminating inside the house. People who barricade the pup in the kitchen or some other area must also provide newspapers to absorb the waste. The pheromones contained within the urine and feces are transferred to the surface of the floor. This can influence the dog to eliminate in that area at a later day. Second, the pup can be placed in its crate-“den” when it cannot be watched during the day. Destructive habits, as well as eliminating inside the house, can be further controlled.

This procedure does have some disadvantages. A young pup should not be placed in its crate for prolonged periods of time. During the day, the limit should be 2-3 hours at a time. As a rule, add 1 to his age in months to equal the number of hours he can be expected to be in a crate comfortably without eliminating. For example, a 2-month-old puppy should not be confined for more than 3 hours. This is because of the frequent periods of activity that occur throughout early development, as well as frequent elimination responses. If you are away from home for a long period, ask someone you trust to take your puppy outside to eliminate at scheduled intervals.

Some dogs are crate trained in a month; some may take longer, up to 1 year. However, please be patient, every puppy is different and learns at his or her own pace. But with lots of love and patience your puppy will grow to be a healthy, happy addition to your family.

Puppy Checklist

Food, Treats, Supplements and Food Bowls

Your puppy should come home with some puppy food. We don't recommend changing it for at least an month. This can cause tummy upset with loose stools. Then make sure you transition the puppy over to their new food gradually over a week's period. Adding a little more each day.

If you are acquiring a large breed puppy. Make sure their food is formulated for a Large Breed puppy. Different breeds require different protein, Calcium, fat etc. The Rapid growth in Large Breed Puppies can causes skeletal disorders (like hip dysplasia) which is believed to be linked to genetics is also linked to diet and made worse by excessive amounts of calcium and/or overfeeding during the puppy phase of life.

Now a days there's a lot of good foods available; we recommend Fromm Gold Large Breed Puppy for all large breeds including Golden Retrievers. Large breed puppies require a balanced diet with the appropriate amount of calcium and phosphorus to support their growth and prevent developmental orthopedic diseases. The r atio is crucial as it helps maintain an appropriate hormonal balance and prevents skeletal abnormalities. Excess calcium can lead to skeletal malformations and mineralization of other tissues, while a deficiency can cause developmental orthopedic diseases.

Puppies are naturally inquisitive, which can often lead to serious injury. Here are some tips on how you can make your house safer for the arrival. These devices can not only be used for potty training but are also used as a safe haven for your new puppy.

An Ex-pen (puppy playpen) is highly recommended , it will confine puppy to one area while potty training. Too much freedom before they are potty trained can lead to having accidents. Also, you won't have to worry about leaving your puppy unattended when you leave the room.

Don't forget a washable and Waterproof puppy pad for inside the expen in case of any potty accidents. They are also ideal for protecting carpet, wood floor, sofa, furniture, car seats and car trunk during travel.

A Baby Gate to limit access to other areas in the home. If you have a fireplace/wood stove always use a 5-Panel Baby Safety Gate/Barrier . It will also come in handy around Christmas for a barrier for the Christmas tree.

Collar and Leash

I ntroducing your puppy to his/her collar and leash can be a challenge. However, if your puppy is trained properly, it will be simple, satisfying and successful. It usually takes only a few hours for a pup or even an adult dog to adjust to a collar. Choose a collar that is light weight and fits comfortably but securely. We recommend this adjustable Collar up to 12 inches, 1/2 inch thick for puppy. Made with cotton or hemp is preferably!

Once your pup accepts the collar, put his leash on and then just sit and watch. We recommend leashes made from cotton or hemp! The leash should be used at first indoors or in a secure confined area. Let puppy drag the leash around on his own but keep a close eye on him so that he doesn't tangle or get hurt. Leave it on for just a few minutes at first.

Later, repeat the exercise for longer periods of time. Put your pup on leash during mealtimes, so he associates the leash with a pleasant event. A Leash will also give you better control of your new puppy when teaching basic commands.

But please stay away from Dog Parks, Hiking Trails, etc. until your new puppy has been fully vaccinated which is usually by the time, they are approximately 4 - 5 months of age. We recommend 2 leashes, so you can leave one in your car.

Get puppy use to walking on a leash as soon as possible, however, avoid public places like parks and hiking trails where other dogs walk until puppy is fully vaccinated. After your pup has been vaccinated introduce your puppy to different environments. Have him interact with a wide variety of family members, friends and even strangers. Take him for walks, rides in the car, family outings such as picnics, little league games, etc... For your Puppies safety and to be a responsible pet owner, always obey the leash laws.

Chew bones and Toys

Let’s move on to chew toys and chew bones. Puppies do teethe and biting is typical and expected. They teethe a lot! Puppies use their mouths to explore, investigate their surroundings and communicate. During this teething stage you will need some hard chew toys/bones and some softer. They tend to bite at your hands because they like the softness of them. We actually recommend rotating the toys, this way they think of it as a new shiny toy.

We highly recommend Kong products. The Kong Extreme is one product because at a later date can be stuffed with treats, peanut butter (as long as it does not contain xylitol which is very toxic) BUDDY BUDDER is 100% Natural Dog Peanut Butter and freeze it for hours of fun, they come in assorted flavors!

Also, you can freeze plain yogurt. Bully Sticks, (we recommend Red Barn) and Antlers are great for teething, we highly recommend them. As with any toy/bones remember to supervise your new puppy and inspect regularly. We also recommend Bully Stick Holder. Which tightly secures bully sticks to prevent choking on the end of the bully stick.

Grooming Supplies & Puppy/Dog Care

Grooming is an important step in caring for your Furbaby and is usually a one-time investment. Grooming is a good way to inspect their skin, coat, ears, pads and teeth.

Here is what we recommend especially for a large breed. The basic recommendations, Tropiclean Puppy Shampoo , Pin Brush , Slicker Brush , Furminator , Curved Grooming Scissors for Dog , Miller Forge Large Dog Clippe r .

A lick mat with suctions that attaches to the shower door or tub can be useful in keeping your puppy occupied and stress-free while bathing.

For a simple way of grooming & de-shedding and a tool that is easy to use is the Pet Grooming Vacuum, 6 in 1 Dog Grooming Kit . It vacuums and also has different sizes of replacement heads for grooming clippers.

A Nail Grinder for more extensive grooming , Waterpik PPR-252 Pet Wand Pro Shower , Flying Pig High Velocity Dog Pet Grooming Dryer w/Heater.

Don't forget their EARS and TEETH. Zymox ear cleaner and a Dental Kit , again Tropiclean products are really good. As they get older you can use Tropiclean Dental Water Additive .

Its best to start them early so the puppy will get used to being groomed, even if they do not need it. The reason why most pups/dogs do not like their nails clipped is that they are not used to having their paws handled. So, while loving, cuddling and petting you pup, take a few moments to handle his paws. Massage their paws, between their toes, on their pads, etc. This way they won’t give you a hard time when it's time to clip their nails.

For boo boo's I prefer do use a natural product. Richard’s Organics Incredible Skin Spray for Dogs and Puppies 12 weeks and older – Provides Relief from Skin Irritations Like Hot Spots, Dry Skin, Insect Bites and More – Speeds Healing, Fast Acting -100% Natural Active Ingredients.

For more serious boo-boo's I like the Vetercyn Wound Healing Spray and/or the HomeoPet HP Healing Cream , Natural Support for Pet Wound Healing. It highly recommended.

Car Ride Home

Now let’s talk a little about the car ride home. Hopefully your new puppy will not be fed too close to his ride home. Bring a Crate , plenty of paper towels, newspapers, Pet wipes and some garbage bags in case your puppy gets sick.

If you ride home is approximately 3 hours your new puppy should be able to hold his bladder for the trip home as long as your new puppy has done his business prior to leaving for the trip home. If you must stop for a potty break, then we recommend a spot that is away from traffic, but also an area that would not be appealing to other dogs. Make sure to put their collar on and use a leash.

The First Night

The Crate should be set up in your bedroom prior to bringing your new puppy home. This way when your puppy wakes, you can her him whimper, bark or cry when needs to go potty. The 1st night can be rough on them. Remember they just spend their 1st 8 weeks with their Momma and Siblings.

A Snuggle Pup will help with anxiety AND aid in comfort. Reduces negative behavior and get more sleep. Helps with crate training and reduces barking and whining. Helping YOU sleep at night.

Make sure you new puppy has eliminated just before bedtime. He should be able to make it at least 2-3 hours at a time in the crate. Expect to get up during the night once or twice depending on the puppy.

We recommend Crate Covers to help quiet a fussy puppy.

The First 48 Hours in New Home

Schedule: Get your new puppy on a schedule right away. With frequent potty breaks every 2-3 hours. Feeding should consist of 3 meals a day, 4-5 hours apart.

Get them used to the crate. With intervals of playtime/socialization time. Don’t wait until the evening. Remember the more you use the crate, the faster the puppy will learn to control their bladder, the faster you will be able to sleep through the night.

Exercise: Walk your puppy on a leash in his own yard. Stay away from public places, like hiking trails and parks. Mainly anywhere other dogs go until your pup is completely vaccinated. A nice walk before retiring will tire your pup out and should sleep better.

Love and attention: You have just added another family member to your family. He needs to be treated like one. Give him lots of love and attention. Don’t forget to praise A LOT for good behavior.

When One Becomes Two or Three…

F irstly, don’t expect your older dog to welcome the puppy with open paws and take him under his/her wing. Much will depend on the age and temperament of your older dog, but it is rare to find a mature dog who is overjoyed at having to share their owner and their home with a young whippersnapper of a puppy.

While many already established dogs will be more tolerant of the new youngster, you can also expect that the new puppy will need to be ‘put in his place’ a number of times. Puppies have underdeveloped communication and social skills, so far the only other dogs they have had to ‘read’ are their littermates and their mother, so they must be shown the ‘rules of the road’ by your older dog. An ex-pen and/or baby/pet gates can be used to separate them when they can't be supervised.
